About Our Lambs

Merino

The Merino is one of the most historically relevant and economically influential breeds of sheep, much prized for its wool. The eating quality of Merino lambs can be comparable to other breeds, but they do require more stringent pre-slaughter management than the other breeds in Australia.

Île-de-France

The Île-de-France is a breed of sheep native to the French region of Île-de-France near Paris. It was first developed at a French veterinary college in the 1830s through crosses of Dishley Leicester and Rambouillet, and was originally known as the Dishley Merino.

Southdown

The Southdown is a small, dual-purpose English sheep, raised primarily for meat. The Southdown breed was originally bred by John Ellman of Glynde, near Lewes, East Sussex, about 200 years ago.

Border Leicester

The Border Leicester is a British breed of sheep. It is a polled, long-wool sheep and is considered a dual-purpose breed as it is reared both for meat and for wool. The sheep are large but docile. They have been exported to other sheep-producing regions, including Australia and the United States.

Bells Beach Beanies

Bells Beach Beanies are 100% Australian Made alpaca beanies made from all-natural fibres and colours. The wool is grown from our own alpaca farm in Bellbrae on the Great Ocean Road within earshot of the world famous Bells Beach in the Surf Coast Shire, Victoria Australia.

After nearly two years of trial and effort we have produced in our first run of 159, 100% alpaca beanies from wool grown from our own alpacas. They are very soft and warm and all natural fibres and colours which is much better for the environment than dyed wool on mostly overseas manufactured beanies.

You will find that the hollow fibre alpaca wool provides a soft warm fit that warms the air inside the fibres but is not itchy or scratchy. The downside of alpaca wool is that although it is soft and warm (hollow fibre) it is not quite as consistent or strong as sheep fibre which makes it difficult to manufacture. Much alpaca wool is hand spun and hand knitted and it is difficult to make commercial production of 100% alpaca fibre products economically viable, even though they are much better for the environment than many imported products.
